Microsoft to kill off Windows Live OneCare next year
In a very surprising move, Microsoft has announced today that Windows Live OneCare customers will be getting the shaft next year. The software giant has decided to replace OneCare with a free security solution (codenamed "Morro") to be released in the second half of next year. The yet-to-be-announced product will be a realtime anti-malware protection solution, whereas OneCare offered that plus backup and management features. Retail sales of the Windows Live OneCare subscription service... Read more »

Microsoft is increasing the capacity offered by its storage service in the Cloud fivefold. This means that users of Windows Live SkyDrive will be able to enjoy no less than 25GB of free online storage. The move comes as a natural evolution of the Windows Live suite of services and applications towards the full implementation of Wave 3. Microsoft indicates that it is currently hammering away at the finishing touches for Windows Live SkyDrive Wave 3, and offers users a taste of what it is in store... Read more »

Windows 7 Scalable Enough To Support 256 Cores
Though obviously Microsoft has taken a fair amount of heat regarding Windows Vista, there’s probably a directly proportional level of hype on their next mainstream OS, Windows 7. Projected by some to be the OS that Vista should have been, and still by others to be nothing more than Vista on steroids (perhaps just a six-pack of Red Bull, depending on who you talk to); there’s plenty of rumor, gossip, leaked and public information to go around to keep your mind off your troubled Vista installation... Microsoft confirms MinWin is in Windows 7, after all
MinWin — the core of the Windows operating system — is, indeed, in Windows 7. It’s just not part of it in the way many people (including yours truly) initially assumed. Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich, who detailed via a Channel 9 Webcast last week how Windows 7 would run on up to 256 processors, tackled yet again the MinWin bugaboo during that same episode. (I say “bugaboo” because ever since Microsoft officials first discussed MinWin, there’s been confusion... Read more »

Microsoft has decided that Windows 7 won’t include built-in programs for e-mail, photo editing, and movie making, as was done with Windows Vista, CNET News.com has learned. The software maker included Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Mail, and Windows Movie Maker as part of Vista, but later chose to offer separate downloadable Windows Live programs that essentially replaced those components with versions that could connect to online services from Microsoft and others. Microsoft told CNET News... Read more »

Windows 7 Beta Is on the Horizon, Forget XP SP3 and Vista SP1
The first Beta of Windows 7 is on the horizon, and in this context it’s right about time to look beyond Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1. The next iteration of the Windows client has been a palpable presence only through the Milestone 1 build dropped at the end of 2007, with the Redmond company gagging all details on the operating system and its development process. At the same time, with the evolution of Vista’s successor toward the first Beta stage, Microsoft... Read more »
