Is Microsoft Coming with its Own Smartphone

With the Mobile World Congress nearing, rumours about Microsoft’s plans to oust its own range of smart phones have gained steam.

The rumors first appeared at the recently concluded CES at Las Vegas. It is thought that the upcoming handset will use Nvidia’s Tegra processor and a Qualcomm telecommunications baseband chip. Microsoft has a decent presence in the smart phone arena, thanks to its Windows Mobile OS. However, the company has never been involved in the production of Windows Mobile devices. Instead, it had a followed a policy of licensing its OS to other manufacturers.

Microsoft already has a fair amount of expertise when it comes to manufacturing and selling hardware devices thanks to the likes of the Xbox and not to mention, the Zune. However, a smartphone would be an entirely different ball game and it will be interesting to watch how Microsoft treads this path. It is pertinent to note that at last year’s MWC, Nvidia had announced that its Tegra APX 2500 mobile processor would be supported by Windows Mobile devices.

While a section of Microsoft supporters seem to be excited about the product, others have slammed Microsoft for getting in to too many things. According to them, most top mobile manufacturers like Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola, amongst others, already use Windows Mobile. Hence, there’s no reason for Microsoft to encroach in to their domain and becoming one of their competitors as a result. This could also result in the others looking for greener pastures for their Mobile OS’ instead of opting for Windows Mobile.

This is still a rumor and it could be that Microsoft is working on Windows Mobile for better integration with the upcoming 3D chips, which will enhance the multimedia experience on the smart phones of the future.
