Microsoft has announced it will replace its Windows security and PC management service with free anti-virus software. Microsoft Windows OneCare will be replaced by the new anti-virus protections in July 2009. The software giant hopes to protect a greater number of consumers with the solution product solutions.

Microsoft Corp on Tuesday announced it will replace its current Windows OneCare service with free anti-virus solutions. Microsoft Windows OneCare is a subscription based service which will end starting July 2009.

The new anti-virus software is called Morro. The free solution will protect PCs running on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. The new anti-virus solutions will guard PC users against spyware, rootkits and Trojans.

"This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware," Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management in the online services division at Microsoft, said in statement.

Anti-virus software firms Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc saw their shares tumble on Wednesday. There are concerns that Microsoft’s new anti-virus solutions would compete with their products. However, Microsoft said its Morro product only includes security protections against malware and is not a security suite.

Symantec and McAfee provide a complete suite of security which includes encryption, firewalls, password protection, parental controls and data backup programs. The free Microsoft anti-virus software does not have these features.

In announcing today that it’s closed a deal to buy Symbian Ltd, mobile phone maker Nokia called the completion of the acquisition a "fundamental step" in creating the Symbian Foundation, a multi-vendor group that will bolster the Symbian OS to take on Android and the LiMo Foundation’s emerging OS as a mobile open source environment.

Beyond Nokia, the foundation has members that include wireless carriers AT&T, Vodafone, and Japanese-based NTT DoCoMo, in addition to phone and chip makers such as Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments.

The group plans to fuse together the three disparate user interface layers of the Symbian OS — UIQ, NTT DoCoMo’s MOAP, and Nokia’s own S60 — into a common framework.

"The platform will offer the means to build a complete mobile device while providing the tools to differentiate devices through tailoring of the user experience, applications and services. This will enable device manufacturers to create unique devices, based on a consistent and common platform, providing fuel and scale for the innovation of others," according to a Foundation white paper.

The new framework — coupled with the underlying, upgraded Symbian OS — will then be licensed to the open source community under the Eclipse Public License (EPL).

Now that the deal is done, with Nokia taking 99.9 percent ownership of the total Symbian shares it didn’t already own, all current employees of Symbian Ltd. are slated to become Nokia employees on February 1 of next year.

Amazon launches music downloads

The online bookseller has branched out into digital music sales. Online retail website Amazon has launched a UK music download service.

Amazon MP3 will sell tracks from 59p and albums from £3. The new music store will offer more than 3 million songs that will work on any digital music player, including Apple’s iPod. The move puts Amazon in direct competition with Apple for a stake in the growing market of online music sales, which in Britain alone was worth an estimated £163m in 2007.

Unlike many files from Apple’s iTunes store, which can only be played through its iTunes interface or on an iPod, the music available from Amazon will be free from the constraints of digital rights management (DRM).

As such, once users download a track, they are free to load and play it on any device: personal computers, mobile phones, and portable media players, including the iPod. The issue of DRM has been a hot topic of late. Advocates say it is an essential tool to combat piracy, but critics say it restricts user choice.

Amazon say that DRM free music is the way of the future

Amazon have also opted for a high-end bit rate encoding for its files - a measure of the degree of compression used when converting files into an MP3 format.

While files from iTunes use a bit rate of 128 kbit/s, Amazon have gone for double that at 256 kbit/s. However, doubling the bit rate doesn’t double the quality. Files from Play.com are encoded at the MP3s maximum of 320 kbit/s. By comparison, an uncompressed audio file on a compact disc has a bit rate of 1,411.2 kbit/s

If holding your head and tearing your hair out were a rare option rather than the daily situation for you when thinking of dealing with your coworkers, wouldn’t you just love to know what to do

Understand that problem exists

There are many types of difficult coworkers. Whether it is cold-shoulder treatment you consistently get from a coworker or constant whining, gossiping, arrogance, rudeness, hostility, shirking of responsibility, bullying, misappropriation of credit and blame, or other aggressive behaviour, the first step in dealing with the problem of a difficult coworker is to acknowledge that it exists.

Analyze your reactions before speaking

Before allocating blame and pointing the accusatory finger at a seemingly difficult coworker examine your own feelings, motivations and reactions and make sure that the problem is not your own inflexibility, intolerance or overreaction to the situation. Perhaps you experience similar problems with other coworkers; perhaps your past experiences have obstructed your ability to deal fairly with a certain character type. It may be that you need to brush up on your own interpersonal skills and be less judgemental and prone to jump to conclusions or misinterpret a situation.

Recognize that you have choices in dealing with the situation.

You can chose to either confront or ignore a negative coworker and if you do chose to confront there are many ways to do so to effect a positive outcome. If the problem coworker is not interfering with or affecting your well-being and the outcome of your work and you sincerely believe you can live with the situation, then you can chose to ignore the problem and see it as an opportunity for self-development and growth. If on the other hand, your productivity or ability to do your job are being affected and the negative atmosphere is draining your energy, stressing and burning you out, you can take the bull by the horns and confront the situation in a diplomatic, well-planned, well-rehearsed and professional manner. Letting negativity simmer just below the surface unaddressed indefinitely will eventually impact both your performance and the perception of your work attitudes by others.

Celebrate the differences

A large part of the success of the modern corporation is derived from the diversity of its workforce and the tremendous synergies that arise from working functionally in teams composed of people with divergent skills, talents and backgrounds. This however also means that you will be forced to work on many occasions with people with very different agendas, styles and attitudes to yours. Learn to accept and celebrate the differences. Remember that the good of the organization is your ultimate goal and you need to work synergistically to achieve that.

Try to understand from other persons perspective

Open-mindedness is key in conflict resolution. Try to understand what perspective a difficult coworker is coming from and what objectives and motivations are influencing their behaviors. Recognize that some employees may have permanent schizoid tendencies towards all people while others may be experiencing temporary character flaws due to a myriad of factors. The latter may include job insecurity, an excessive workload, dissatisfaction with working conditions or management, feelings of inferiority or inadequacy, lack of clarity about their own role, general professional ineptitude or even personal or family problems at home. Try to understand their view of the world as viewed from their very own unique ‘mountain top’ in order to better anticipate and respond to their difficult behaviours.

Adopt a positive mindframe

In order to defuse a conflict you must have a positive, optimistic attitude and the confidence to accept that the situation can be resolved be it through learning to accommodate the difficult coworker, negotiating with the coworker to achieve a compromise for one or both parties, or collaborating with them to effect a positive resolution where all parties win and are happy. Have faith that the negativity need not drag on indefinitely and that both parties can learn to work together peacefully, if not completely collaboratively.

Define the difficult behavior

Clarify the problem by defining precisely the behaviours that bother you from the difficult coworker. Write them down and include specific examples. Then determine which you can try to change and which you will chose to ignore.

Define the desired outcome

Once you have dissected the problem and analyzed precisely what the behaviours of the difficult coworker are that you would like to change, you can decide what positive outcomes you would like to effect and construct a specific gameplan for achieving them. Make sure the goals you set are measurable, specific and realistic.

Anticipate the obstacles

Beyond having a clear set of goals for a confrontation, you must be able to anticipate and arm yourself against all the obstacles that may block your path. Make sure you are well prepared for any response, objection or negative reaction from the difficult coworker and that you have the stamina, tact and courage to stay your course until your desired outcome is achieved.

Stay calm and collected

Distance yourself emotionally from the problem and stay calm, collected and in control at all times. Don’t get defensive or let negative feelings fester or boil over the top. Maintain your peace and objectivity by asking yourself what learning is to be had from the situation and latching on to the positive aspects of the relationship versus the negative at all times. If there are no positive aspects to the relationship concentrate on the positive outcome you wish to achieve. Practice deep breathing and visualization techniques whenever you feel the resentment growing and fear loss of control. The more calm and collected you are the more rational will be your approach to tackling the issue and the more likely you are to win the difficult coworker’s trust, confidence and respect.

Be tactful but direct

Once you chose to confront a difficult coworker, make sure you give well-rehearsed, constructive criticism and that you deliver it in a calm, polite, tactful, diplomatic and non-threatening manner. Keep your voice low and select your words carefully. State your points of contention clearly, directly and unambiguously and give concrete examples to support them. Do not harshly criticize or humiliate a coworker or make accusatory remarks. Remember, the goal of the confrontation is to find solutions and alleviate the negative atmosphere not feed them.

Have your discussion face-to-face

Make sure that when you do decide to confront a difficult coworker, you do so face-to-face and not over the phone, by memo or by e-mail. You are much more likely to understand each other and come to a healthy resolution if you can watch and monitor each other’s body language and communicate in a free, spontaneous and unhampered fashion.

Listen actively

Many a volatile situation has been defused by the simple art of active listening. Learn to ask questions, give and receive feedback a nd actively and intently listen to the difficult coworker as they expound on their frustrations, their view of the world and why they act the way they do. Allow them to vent their feelings and frustrations before you explore means to clear the air and improve the atmosphere between you. Oftentimes, just the feeling of being listened to objectively and understood may win their confidence, alleviate any harsh feelings they may harbour towards you and generally ease the situation.

Maintain a healthy perspective

In the heat of the moment, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that negative actions or attitudes may have been wholly unintended. Coworkers cannot read your mind and unless you make a conscious effort to let them know exactly what behaviours or attitudes are bothering you, they may well not have any idea of the trouble that is brewing just below the surface and the pain they are causing. It is very helpful to bear in mind that inadvertently offensive behaviours may not have been designed to be so and are in all likelihood not targeted at you personally. Remind yourself at all times that the difficult coworker’s hostility, rudeness or other unacceptable character flaws are not about you but about their own conditioning, experiences and view of the world.

Avoid guerrilla tactics

Don’t engage in negative behaviours with the aim of exacting revenge or outdoing the negative coworker at their own game. Such counterproductive negative behaviours include verbally attacking the difficult coworker, shunning them in both private and public, rallying the troops to alienate and gang up against them or approaching the coworker’s boss to complain about them before you have raised the issue with them. Opt instead to engineer a win-win scenario for conflict resolution that leaves both of you and the organization as a whole happier, healthier and more enriched.

Dont burn bridges

Losing your temper, saying hurtful things, making accusatory remarks at coworkers or management will not solve matters and may only come back to haunt you. Avoid burning bridges. You never know who you will have to work with at a later date on a different project or even in a different company. Keep your relationships healthy and avoid saying or doing anything you may regret.

Be generous

Stroke the difficult coworker’s ego where appropriate, point out their strengths, give them recognition and credit for positive actions taken, acknowledge their successes and be kind and gracious in your sincere attempts to find common ground. Rather than dictating an outcome, allow them to have input and give them options and choices. Treat them as you would like to be treated as you address the issues of concern and your courtesy and professionalism may well turn the office nightmare into a close and lasting friend.

Document

It is a good idea with chronically difficult coworkers to document their negative words and actions. This will help you gain perspective and will give you specific and concrete examples to refer to when you confront them or if matters escalate and management gets involved.

Recognize when you need help

If despite all your good intentions, flexibility and tactful discussions with the difficult coworkers about their troublesome behaviour, the negative behaviour persists, it may be time to talk to you boss. This is especially necessary if your own performance is being affected and there is no positive outcome in sight. Again, the goal is to seek a resolution so be clear about the problem and the desired solution as you approach your boss.

Recognize when you have to leave

It may be that management itself is inadvertently rewarding or positively reinforcing negative behaviours. It may also be that they are unwilling or incapable of stopping it or that the do not adequately comprehend or accept the seriousness of the situation. In these cases you may be better off seeking greener pastures elsewhere, whether it be in a different role or division within the company where you do not have to deal with the difficult coworker, or in a different company altogether.

Software major Microsoft is in discussions to buy the online search business of Yahoo for about 20 billion dollars, media report says.

A few months back, Yahoo had spurned a takeover bid from Microsoft worth more than 47 billion dollars.

It is thought that Jonathan Miller, ex-chairman and chief executive of AOL, and Ross Levinsohn, a former president of Fox Interactive Media, have been lined up to lead the new management team. Senior directors at Microsoft and Yahoo are understood to have agreed the broad terms of a deal, but there is no guarantee that it will succeed. However Yahoo is under intense pressure from its investors after rejecting the offer from Microsoft. This valued each share at $33. Since then Yahoo’s price has tumbled to a low of $9 per share."

The Sunday Times said that under the terms of the proposed transaction, Microsoft would provide a five-billion dollar facility to the Miller and Levinsohn management team. The duo would raise an additional five-billion dollar from external investors.

Are you the kind who has always wished for a system that would offer you complete control over your home? A system that let’s you control virtually all things electronic - remotely? While there have been "home automation systems" available at your disposal already, these are usually expensive, lack interoperability and vary in complexity.

However, there is good news now. Folks at Nokia have just released details of what it calls the "Nokia Home Control Center". This is an open platform for developers to develop plu and play solutions that will enable users to control their home via phone or PC irrespective of where they’re located.

The HCC will allow users to initially control things like electricity usage and basic control of their electronic gadgets. However, in due course, it will implement more complex tasks like security, air conditioning and ventilation. All these complex controls can be managed by using a simple web browser. Features for the module include ethernet connectors, WLAN support, and SD card reader. The CPU runs at 533 Mhz and has 6GB of storage space.

The system will include Smart Home kits ranging from starter, security, energy, and baby monitoring. The solution will be demonstrated at the Nokia World event in Barcelona, Spain, on December 2-3. It will be up for sale by the end of 2009 in Europe.
View the complete specifications here.

Looking after your mobile helps to ensure it has a long and productive life. There are 8 easy maintenance tips to help you get the best out of your mobile phone. All of the points below should also apply to your battery, charger and any other accessories.

KEEP YOUR MOBILE:
Charged: Ensure your battery is fully charged, and then completely run it down before recharging. Recharging too early causes your battery to run out of power more quickly.

Secure: For security reasons, enable the PIN on your SIM Card and Phone-lock on your phone to avoid unauthorized used. These security checks will also be activated when the phone is power cycled. You can check with your carrier or the phone manual for the features and also for information on blocking your SIM card and phone IMEI number if the phone is stolen. For more information please see the Security Tips located on the AMTA Lost and Stolen website.

Protected: Make sure you use a keypad lock to lock your phone. Unplanned calls can cost a fortune and even though your phone may be in a safe place, such as in a bag, your phone will still get knocked around to a surprising degree. Rough treatment can damage electronic circuit boards so avoid dropping or unnecessarily shaking your phone.

Battery: Be safe with your batteries. Use only genuine batteries from your phone manufacturer and only buy from authorized dealers. Going for the cheap option of a counterfeit battery can be dangerous.

Clean: Don’t use harsh detergents, cleaning solvents or harsh chemicals to clean your phone. Wipe only with a soft cloth.

Covered: a protective cover will help repel dust and dirt, and prevent scratches. Make sure the cover you choose is of good quality. Low quality covers with no air pockets can damage you phone by creating humidity inside the cover.

Storing your phone: Always store your phone in a dry place. Avoid rain, high humidity and liquids. All of these may contain minerals that could corrode the electronic circuits.
At the right temperature: To ensure a long life, keep your phone in a stable temperature. Avoid exposing your phone to liquid and/or exposing your phone to extreme temperature change from hot to cold and vice versa. This might create condensation and damage the phone.

Microsoft is increasing the capacity offered by its storage service in the Cloud fivefold. This means that users of Windows Live SkyDrive will be able to enjoy no less than 25GB of free online storage. The move comes as a natural evolution of the Windows Live suite of services and applications towards the full implementation of Wave 3. Microsoft indicates that it is currently hammering away at the finishing touches for Windows Live SkyDrive Wave 3, and offers users a taste of what it is in store for them.

"You asked us to make it easier to organize and download your files, so we’re answering you with four key new features to address your needs: download photos directed to your to Windows Live Photo Gallery; download as a .zip file. Download an entire folder in one compressed file (initially available only in the United States, Denmark, and Ireland); move files between folders and copy files to multiple folders," a member of the Windows Live SkyDrive team revealed.

Microsoft has labored to tailor Windows Live SkyDrive as a service for digital photo storage and sharing. In this context, the Redmond company has introduced more than 20 new features and improvements, tweaking SkyDrive in order to better accommodate digital images. Among the photo optimizations, the software giant has increased the display size of the thumbnails, made it possible for users to order photo prints from the service, offered people tags and what it referred to as a gorgeous online slide show.

"We’ve dramatically renovated the sharing experience to make it easier to share the stuff you care about. Share your files and photos without requiring friends and family to use Windows Live ID. Organize your contacts by category for easy repeat sharing, or share with your entire network or extended network. Share links to your favorite websites using Windows Live Toolbar. The links are stored on your SkyDrive. See what your friends have shared lately, all in one place," the SkyDrive team representative added.

In addition, through this service Microsoft permits users to synchronize their Internet Explorer favorites between computers, and introduces an array of new languages including: Basque, Catalan, Guajarati, Hindi, Indonesian, Kannada, Malay, Malayalam, Marathi, Serbian-Cyrillic, Tamil, Telugu, and Vietnamese. Last, but definitely not least, the graphical user interface of SkyDrive will be overhauled to match the visual style of Windows Live Wave 3. The company has not disclosed when it will roll out Windows Live SkyDrive Wave 3.

Federal district judge Dale A. Kimball has handed down the final judgment in the SCO case. The decision dismisses SCO’s latest claims, grants declaratory relief to Novell, and sustains the court’s previous judgment that SCO owes Novell over $2.54 million (plus interest) for unjust enrichment.

SCO’s protracted legal shenanigan has been running for roughly five years now. The company originally claimed that it owned the UNIX SVRX copyrights and that incontrovertible evidence had been uncovered that the open source Linux kernel was written using a significant amount of code that was misappropriated from SVRX. In reality, SCO’s own internal audits of Linux source code turned up no evidence of copyright infringement; meanwhile, Novell has turned out to be the rightful owner of the SVRX copyrights.

SCO managed to use its false claims to extract licensing revenue out of companies that were apparently uninterested in contesting its claims. Novell took SCO’s claims to court and eventually triumphed, which pushed SCO off of the precipice and into bankruptcy.

Judge Kimball determined that SCO was subject to a contract with Novell, which it violated by lifting SVRX confidentiality provisions in a licensing agreement with Sun. This move exceeded the authority granted to SCO under the terms of a 1994 asset purchase agreement that enabled SCO to sell limited SVRX licenses to third parties on behalf of Novell. Judge Kimball also determined that SCO breached its fiduciary duty by neglecting to remit the requisite portion of the licensing revenue to Novell.

In addition to the $2,547,817 that SCO was originally ordered to pay to Novell in a previous judgment, SCO will also have to pay $918,122 in prejudgment interest and $489 per day from August 29 until November 20. SCO is in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings and does not presently have the resources to pay the amount in full. A constructive trust has been established with $625,000 of SCO’s remaining resources.

SCO could still theoretically appeal, but it seems unlikely that the dying UNIX vendor can afford to do so. Several of SCO’s attempts to reorganize have failed and a private equity firm that was in negotiations to resurrect SCO has backed away from the deal. SCO’s own management has substantial doubts about the company’s future.

Despite all the legal decisions to the contrary, SCO’s number one man, Darl McBride, has continued to espouse his belief that Linux was built by stealing from UNIX. Regardless of his opinion, SCO’s long battle is finally reaching a very undignified end.

Google has been quietly laying off staff and up to 10,000 jobs could be on the chopping block according to sources. Since August, hundreds of employees have been laid off and there are reports that about 500 of them were recruiters for Google.

a loophole has allowed Google to keep quiet about the cutbacks. The trick, WebGuild reports, all comes down to categories: Google classifies about 10,000 of its workers as “temporary operational expenses,” which means their positions are not official and could be eliminated without public notification.

“Google has hundreds of lawyers figuring out how not to get caught,” WebGuild President Daya Baran suggests. “One of them is by moving workers from job to job every few months so that their status remains temporary. That is why you probably have never spoken to the same person twice at Google and that is also why there is somebody new on the job and most times you know more about their job than they do,” he says.

Google has yet to publicly comment on any of the speculation.

A bulk of the workers have been there for up to five years and many know others who had been there for seven years or more moving from job to job.

There is no question the economic downturn is hitting Google hard and with the slowdown in online advertising, their troubles are just beginning.

Have you ever wanted to mark up Google search results? Maybe you’re an avid hiker and the trail map site you always go to is in the 4th or 5th position and you want to move it to the top. Or perhaps it’s not there at all and you’d like to add it. Or maybe you’d like to add some notes about what you found on that site and why you thought it was useful. Starting today you can do all this and tailor Google search results to best meet your needs.

Today we’re launching SearchWiki, a way for you to customize search by re-ranking, deleting, adding, and commenting on search results. With just a single click you can move the results you like to the top or add a new site. You can also write notes attached to a particular site and remove results that you don’t feel belong. These modifications will be shown to you every time you do the same search in the future. SearchWiki is available to signed-in Google users. We store your changes in your Google Account. If you are wondering if you are signed in, you can always check by noting if your username appears in the upper right-hand side of the page.

The changes you make only affect your own searches. But SearchWiki also is a great way to share your insights with other searchers. You can see how the community has collectively edited the search results by clicking on the "See all notes for this SearchWiki" link.

That’s correct… if you thought Amitabh’s amazing "bulb laden" costume in Yaarana was a technological wonder, you’ve heard nothing. The concept of "intelligent" fabrics is an old wives tale now. This field has had several advances in the not too recent past with attempts by many to introduce smartwear into the mainstream market with features like auto-temperature regulation, wearable keyboards, and even fiberoptic clothing, an advanced version of the Yaarana gimmick, where you actually light up the room you enter!

Most of these techniques were based on the "old" way of integrating sensors, wires, and circuits into a normal fabric. This is the bane of such "wearable computers," and resulted in their easy damage and their heavy maintenance. There is also loss of comfort, an all important factor, owing to the added weight and inflexibility.

With a lesson well learnt, scientists concentrated more on the comfort and unobtrusiveness of the fabric, and worked on developing the technology. They redesigned the fabric and integrated sensors within the material, instead of retrofitting the fabric with sensors after manufacture.

Enter carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes have seen global acceptance in various new-age technological applications. Be it their use in super glue of the future or their part in developing DRAM-like memory, they are the next big thing! In the quest for a perfect smart fabric, scientists stumbled upon this new technology, and it seems to be just what they have been looking for all these years!

The technology was conceptualized by Nocholas Kotov, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Michigan. His goal was to home in on an alternative to the existing complex electronic textiles. He chose carbon nanotubes for this project, and the results were amazing! While there have been attempts in the past to integrate this technology with fabrics, these have met with little success.

Kotov and his team dipped a normal cotton fabric into a mixture of carbon nanotubes and a "conducive polymer," which gave the fabric the ability to carry a larger amount of electricity than previous versions of carbon nanotube-based fabrics. Kotov also displayed how an LED shone brightly when it was put into a circuit between two coated threads.

Kotov and team did not stop there. Being aware of the biosensing abilities of carbon nanotubes, thanks to their use in chemical sensing in clinical diagnostics, they decided to integrate these functionalities into the fabric as well. Kotov coated the fabric with the binding molecules of albumin, a human blood protein. When a target molecule comes into contact with the antibodies, they change the conductivity of the nanotube such that the change is detectable. The result? The carbon nanotube-integrated fabric could detect human blood! Additionally, this wearable diagnostic kit was sensitive enough to differentiate between bovine and human albumin. "Despite the simplicity of the concept, the sensitivity is amazing," says Kotov.

In future, you might have clothes that could monitor your heart, measure the chemical composition of your body fluids, or keep track of your local environment! This development promises to revolutionize healthcare and emergency response services. While a wearable diagnostic kit does not sound very interesting, it could be of vital importance in specific situations like war zones, where remote teams could be alerted if a soldier is injured and starts bleeding. Future systems could warn users of allergic substances in the air, if they are close to such a source. The possibilities are endless.
