Companies companies layoffs at all time High
The recession is killing jobs at an alarming pace, with tens of thousands of new layoffs announced Monday by some of the biggest names in American business — Pfizer, Caterpillar and Home Depot.
The unemployment rate, now at a 16-year high of 7.2 percent, could hit 10 percent or higher later this year or early next year, under some analysts’ projections.
Then over the weekend someone at IBM Canada confirmed the obvious: Yes, of course layoffs are underway. Now we get more details from this morning’s WSJ. IBM still isn’t saying how deep the cuts are, but the Journal has confirmed 2,850 after getting their hands on leaked IBM documents.
Microsoft Corp. said it will slash up to 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months. Intel Corp. said it will cut up to 6,000 manufacturing jobs.
Sun Microsystems, the world’s fourth-biggest server maker, announced huge layoffs for its fiscal Q2.
The Santa Clara, California-based company plans to cut up to 6,000 of its 33,000 employees over the next year, a move designed to save up to $800 million.
American Express has cut 46 jobs at its Linton call center.The news was confirmed by director of communications for American Express Business Travel.
Texas Instruments to cut 1,200 jobs in Dallas-Fort Worth.Roughly two-thirds of the 1,800 layoffs that Texas Instruments Inc. announced Monday afternoon will come in North Texas, where the company employs about 11,000 people.
Philips Electronics, the world’s largest lighting maker, on Monday reported a fourth-quarter loss of 1.47 billion euros ($1.9 billion) and said it would cut 6,000 jobs, blaming weak global economic conditions for poor business performance, asset writedowns and restructuring charges.
