Airtel Fair Usage Policy
Airtel one of the most preferred ISP in India has resorted to capping the data limits of unlimited plans. And they are citing it as Airtel Fair Usage policy. Similar schemes were made famous by Comcast in the US, which had raised much hue and cry and ultimately lead to broadband metering system in the continent. An oddity of the policy is that subscribers weren’t informed about it and was first noticed by some sharp eyed users who noticed the speeds being reduced to exact half of what they had experienced the previous day. The following limits have been in place from Feb 7th :
128 kbps = 10 GB download limit per month
256 kbps = 15 GB download limit per month
384 kbps = 20 GB download limit per month
512 kbps = 25 GB download limit per month
1 Mbps = 150 GB download limit per month
Actually Airtel has withdrawn all their unlimited plans except 256kbps and 384kbps. So, now there is no way to get 512kbps or 1mbps unlimited plan.
That too these 256kbps and 384kbps unlimited plans cost Rs 100 and Rs 200 more than their earlier price respectively..
Earlier 256kbps plan was available at Rs 799 and now the same plan costs Rs 899, whereas the 384kbps plan was available for 999Rs earlier, now costs Rs1199.
Ironically there is no link to the "Fair Usage Policy" in Airtel website. Clearly this policy is a violation of guidelines provided by TRAI. Hopefully someone will complain about this to TRAI and fix this. Or at-least lets hope that other players will not start something like this. Competition is good, and lets hope that tough competition makes Airtel to change their policy.
